AliPrime is a men's botanical complex containing LJBoost™ Tongkat Ali extract, tribulus, maca, and ginseng. Tongkat ali has been studied in relation to stress, mood, and hormone markers, but these are different outcomes: a change in a questionnaire score cannot be equated with a change in a blood or saliva test.
What is tongkat ali?
Tongkat ali is a common name for Eurycoma longifolia, a plant native to Southeast Asia. Supplements use root material, including water and other extracts. The finished ingredient depends on the source material, extraction method, and standardization.
So a “study of tongkat ali” does not mean that researchers tested any root powder or any product containing the plant. To judge whether a result applies, it is necessary to compare the extract, serving, duration of use, and participant characteristics.
How the 2013 study was designed
The 2013 study included 64 people with moderately elevated perceived stress: 32 men and 32 women. They were randomly assigned to receive either 200 mg a day of the standardized water extract Physta™ or a visually similar placebo. The study lasted four weeks, and 63 participants completed it.
Before and after the intervention, the researchers assessed mood with the POMS questionnaire and measured salivary free cortisol and testosterone in the morning, afternoon, and evening. This matters: the study included both self-reported responses and laboratory markers, but it did not assess diagnoses, work performance, or long-term health.
What changed among participants?
Compared with placebo, the extract group had lower scores for tension, anger, and confusion. The authors also reported a reduction in cortisol exposure and an increase in the salivary testosterone measure. These findings applied to the mixed group of men and women with moderate stress.
Not every mood scale moves in the same direction. The questionnaire measures tension, depression, anger, vigour, fatigue, and confusion separately. Improvement in several items does not mean that the extract treats stress overall, an anxiety disorder, or depression. A laboratory change also does not prove that a person will feel more energetic or notice an improvement in sexual function.
Limitations to keep in mind
The study was small and short. It was funded by Biotropics Malaysia, a company connected with the ingredient studied, and some authors reported commercial ties in this field. This does not erase the findings, but it makes independent replication especially valuable.
Later studies examined different questions and participant groups. For example, in the 2021 randomized study, 105 men aged 50–70 with low baseline total testosterone took Physta® extract. After 12 weeks, some doses affected total testosterone, fatigue, and a questionnaire on age-related symptoms. That study did not repeat the everyday-stress model in a broad group of adults.
A 2024 systematic review found only a few studies of Eurycoma longifolia and described it as potentially effective for increasing total testosterone in certain groups of men. “Potentially” is important: the evidence remains limited, and stress-related outcomes are even less studied.
Separating how you feel from hormone markers
When considering men's wellbeing, it helps to distinguish three levels:
- How you feel — tension, fatigue, mood, and libido;
- Behaviour and function — sleep, exercise, work performance, and sexual function;
- Laboratory markers — testosterone, cortisol, and other tests ordered when clinically indicated.
One level does not replace another. Low energy does not confirm testosterone deficiency, and a single test does not explain relationships, lack of sleep, overload, or psychological wellbeing. If hormone deficiency is suspected, a clinician makes a diagnosis based on symptoms and repeated laboratory measurements.
What AliPrime contains
AliPrime contains four botanical ingredients: standardized LJBoost™ Tongkat Ali extract, tribulus terrestris, maca root, and ginseng. Each capsule contains 500 mg of the total blend; a package contains 60 capsules.
LJBoost™ and Physta™, the branded ingredient used in the 2013 and 2021 studies, are different ingredients. Even when they come from the same plant, they should not be treated as identical without comparing their standardization and composition. Research on Physta™ does not establish the same effect for AliPrime, and studies of tongkat ali alone do not describe the effects of combining maca, tribulus, and ginseng.
How to take AliPrime
Take two capsules daily after a meal with water. The recommended course is at least four weeks. Do not exceed the stated daily serving.
If you have cardiovascular disease or take medication, consult a healthcare professional. If fatigue, low mood, sleep problems, or changes in sexual function persist, discuss the possible causes with a doctor. AliPrime is not a medicine and does not replace treatment for an anxiety disorder, depression, or hormone deficiency.
Scientific interest in tongkat ali comes from studies of specific extracts. The available research supports further study, but does not justify promising the same reduction in stress for every man. A practical approach is to assess mood, day-to-day function, and test results separately, and to view AliPrime as a botanical complex rather than a diagnostic test or treatment.
