AliPrime: Why Tribulus Studies Reach Different Conclusions

AliPrime is a capsule formula containing LJBoost™ Tongkat Ali extract, tribulus, maca, and ginseng. Tribulus is often discussed in relation to libido, erectile function, and testosterone, although these are different outcomes. Two randomized trials show why a single broad conclusion is not possible.

Tribulus is not one standardized ingredient

Tribulus terrestris is a plant used to make powders and extracts. Products vary by plant part, raw-material-to-extract ratio, saponin content, and daily amount. Findings for a specific standardized extract therefore apply primarily to that extract.

A plant name on a label does not tell you whether the ingredient matches the material used in a clinical trial. Even the same number of milligrams can describe chemically different preparations.

What the 2014 study assessed

The 2014 double-blind study included 30 men over 40 who reported erectile dysfunction. Fifteen received tribulus and fifteen received a placebo for 30 days. Before and after the intervention, researchers measured total testosterone and used the short form of the International Index of Erectile Function, IIEF-5.

IIEF-5 scores improved over time in both groups, but there was no difference between tribulus and placebo. Total testosterone also showed no advantage. The authors concluded that, at the amount and duration studied, the product was no better than placebo.

How the 2017 study differed

The 2017 study included 180 men aged 18–65 with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, sometimes accompanied by low desire. The trial lasted 12 weeks, and 172 participants completed it.

This study used a specific Bulgarian product, Tribestan®: a dry extract with a 35–45:1 ratio, standardized for furostanol saponins. Participants took six tablets a day. The primary measure was the full IIEF scale, which covers several areas of sexual function.

After 12 weeks, the total IIEF score improved more in the extract group than in the placebo group. Differences also appeared in some domains, including satisfaction, desire, and orgasmic function. The rate of adverse events did not differ between groups.

Why the findings differed

The studies differed in nearly every important respect:

  • 30 participants versus 180;
  • one month versus three months;
  • different products and dosing schedules;
  • the short IIEF-5 versus the full IIEF scale;
  • different age ranges and eligibility criteria.

The difference does not necessarily mean that one study was “right” and the other “wrong.” A larger, longer study of a specific standardized product found an effect on a questionnaire, while a small, short study using a different material did not.

Erectile function and testosterone are not the same

Erections depend on blood vessels, the nervous system, medicines, emotional well-being, and relationships—not only on testosterone levels. An improved questionnaire score does not prove that a hormone increased, and a change in a lab measure does not guarantee better sexual function.

An updated 2025 systematic review found some positive results for erectile function, but described the overall evidence as low quality and found no reliable confirmation of increased testosterone. This supports assessing the two outcomes separately.

How tribulus fits into AliPrime

In AliPrime, tribulus is combined with LJBoost™ Tongkat Ali, maca root, and ginseng. One capsule contains 500 mg of the whole botanical blend, not 500 mg of tribulus. The product information does not identify its tribulus as identical to Tribestan® or to the material used in the 2014 study.

The studies help explain the scientific interest in the plant, but they do not prove that AliPrime treats erectile dysfunction. The effects of four ingredients cannot be added together arithmetically.

Use and when to seek medical care

Take two AliPrime capsules daily after a meal with water. The recommended course is at least four weeks. Do not exceed the daily serving or combine several men’s formulas without checking for overlapping ingredients.

If you have cardiovascular disease or take medication, consult a healthcare professional. Persistent changes in erectile function may be associated with blood vessels, diabetes, hormone disorders, medicines, or stress, so do not delay an evaluation. AliPrime is not a medicine and does not replace prescribed treatment.
