What Is NMN and How Is It Different from NAD+

NMN is short for nicotinamide mononucleotide. This substance is involved in the production of NAD+, which cells need for metabolism and for obtaining energy from food. That is why NMN often appears in descriptions of supplements focused on vitality and age-related changes.

To understand the role of NMN, let’s look at how cells use NAD+ and what researchers have observed in people taking NMN.

Why the body needs NAD+

To use energy from food, cells carry out many chemical reactions. NAD+ helps these reactions take place. It is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and is needed for enzymes—substances that regulate chemical processes in the body.

NAD+ production is linked to vitamin B3, or niacin. The body can also use tryptophan, an amino acid obtained from protein-containing foods. NMN is therefore not the only substance through which the body obtains NAD+. The US National Institutes of Health reference on niacin and NAD.

What is the difference between NMN and NAD+?

NMN and NAD+ are different molecules connected in the same process. NMN is one of the precursors the body uses to produce NAD+. NAD+ itself directly participates in metabolic reactions.

SubstanceRole in the body
NMNOne of the substances involved in NAD+ production
NAD+A substance needed for many metabolic reactions in cells
Vitamin B3A nutrient also linked to NAD+ production

These names should not be treated as interchangeable when reading an ingredient list. If a package lists NMN, that does not mean it contains ready-made NAD+ in the same amount.

What human studies of NMN have found

A study published in Nature Metabolism in 2026 compared several NAD+ precursors. It included 65 healthy adults. In the group that received NMN for 14 days, NAD+ levels in the blood increased. The study helps explain the metabolism of these substances, but it does not establish that taking NMN extends life or noticeably changes appearance. The study of NMN and other NAD+ precursors.

Another study examined NMN for ten weeks in postmenopausal women with prediabetes and overweight or obesity. Researchers found improved muscle insulin sensitivity. This result concerns a specific group of participants and a particular measure of metabolism. It cannot be generalized to everyone or to all products containing NMN. The 2021 study in Science.

When reading about such studies, it is useful to distinguish three things: a change in a lab result, a change in how someone feels, and an effect on lifespan. These are different outcomes. Evidence for one does not prove the others.

How SunRise fits into a morning routine

SunRise by YES Global combines Uthever NMN with spermidine, lutein, zeaxanthin, and plant-based ingredients. NMN is a precursor to NAD+, while lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the retina. This combination brings several different ingredients together in one daily serving.

The powder comes in 15 sachets of 2 g each. A single serving is easy to take along and use without measuring with a spoon. YES Global recommends one sachet in the morning on an empty stomach; follow the package instructions for directions and precautions. Learn more about SunRise.

Why NMN is combined with other ingredients

Energy metabolism, nutrition, and cellular protective mechanisms are interconnected. In SunRise, NMN is combined with apple and grape cell culture ingredients, berry extracts, and spermidine. Interest in NMN is based primarily on its role in NAD+ production and findings from studies of NMN itself.

What to consider before taking it

Follow the directions on the label of the specific product. Dosages and durations used in research studies do not replace those directions. If you take medication, have a chronic condition, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, discuss the ingredients with a healthcare professional; assessing a product requires knowing the names and amounts of all its ingredients. SunRise can fit into a morning routine: one serving combines NMN and plant-based ingredients, and the sachet format makes regular use convenient. View SunRise.
