7 Tea: Where Its Monk Fruit Sweetness Comes From

7 Tea is a single-serve drink made with black tea, dry plant-based creamer, inulin, seven types of mushroom ingredients and monk fruit sweetener. Its sweet taste does not come from ordinary sugar as a separate ingredient, but from fruit extract containing intensely sweet compounds called mogrosides.

What Is Monk Fruit?

Monk fruit, or Siraitia grosvenorii, is a plant in the gourd family traditionally grown in southern China. To make a food sweetener, the fruit is crushed, water-soluble compounds are extracted, and the sweet fraction is then purified and concentrated.

The taste of the extract depends on processing and purification. A whole dried fruit, homemade infusion and standardised food sweetener are not the same product form.

Why Mogrosides Taste Sweet

The main sweet compounds in monk fruit are called mogrosides. They interact with sweet-taste receptors on the tongue and are perceived as much sweeter than sucrose. Much less extract is needed to produce sweetness than ordinary sugar.

That intensity does not mean mogrosides “contain more sugar”. They are a different class of compounds and create sweetness in a different way. A specific sweetener blend may also include carriers or other ingredients, so read the full label.

In home baking, sugar affects not only taste but also volume, moisture and browning. Monk fruit cannot always replace it “one for one”. In a ready-made drink, the manufacturer handles the formulation by combining the sweetener with other ingredients.

Why a Sweet Drink Does Not Necessarily Contain Sugar

Taste receptors tell the brain that something tastes sweet; they do not analyse its chemistry. A drink can taste sweet without sucrose. Conversely, a lack of pronounced sweetness does not guarantee that a product contains no carbohydrates.

When choosing a drink, look beyond the sweetener claim. Check the ingredient list, serving size, carbohydrates, sugars and overall energy value. This information is especially important for people with diabetes: sweeteners do not replace an individual meal plan or glucose monitoring.

Why the Sweetener Does Not Determine a Cup’s Calories

If one ingredient contributes little energy, that does not make the whole drink calorie-free. Calories may come from dry creamer, milk, syrup, protein or grain ingredients. The full serving determines the result in a multi-ingredient blend.

The useful question is not “Does monk fruit have calories?” but “What is the nutritional value of the prepared drink?” Check the label for the pack you are using and count anything you add yourself.

How Monk Fruit Works in 7 Tea

In 7 Tea, monk fruit extract provides sweetness while dry plant-based creamer gives the drink a creamy texture. Black tea forms the tea base and inulin provides fermentable dietary fibre. The mushroom blend contains tiger milk mushroom, chaga, reishi, lion’s mane, agaricus, maitake and cordyceps.

The formula has 11 ingredients in total. One 30 g sachet makes one cup; the pack contains 10 servings. The sachet’s weight refers to the entire blend and does not tell you how much monk fruit extract it contains.

The amount of water changes the flavour’s concentration: less water makes the sweetness and creaminess more noticeable; more water softens them. Dilution does not change the total amount of ingredients from one sachet.

How to Prepare It

Empty one sachet into a cup, add hot water and stir well until smooth. Try the prepared drink without extra sugar or syrup first. If it tastes too strong, add a little water and stir again.

Black tea contains naturally occurring caffeine. If it affects your sleep, have 7 Tea earlier in the day. If you have a food allergy, check the full plant-based creamer ingredients on the pack. The product is not a medicine.

Monk fruit gives 7 Tea its sweetness through mogrosides, but it accounts for only one part of the recipe. Assess the drink as a whole: the tea, creamer, inulin, mushroom ingredients, serving size and anything else you add to the cup.
